Leon Spiro was a member of a pioneer California family. He was also a literary impresario; a collector and distributor of poetry in nine languages; and a translator of Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Besides being a civil engineer for the city of San Francisco, he also created the Star-West Library and the publications Star-West, the Sausalito-Belvedere Gazette, and the Larvae du Golden Gate. In addition, he also wrote columns about California's interests and concerns for The Journal, an official publication of the Birmingham (England) Trades Council, during the 1960s and 1970s.
